A major illness can affect much more than a person’s physical health. Treatment expenses, loss of regular income, home-care requirements and changes in daily living may place considerable financial pressure on the entire family. LIC’s Critical Illness Health Rider provides a fixed financial benefit when the Life Assured is diagnosed with a specified critical illness and fulfils the applicable policy conditions.

The LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator offers a simple way to understand the rider benefits before making a financial decision or reviewing an existing policy. Based on the information entered, it estimates the immediate critical illness benefit, Assisted Living Benefit, total scheduled payout and basic claim eligibility.

This calculator is designed for LIC’s Critical Illness Health Rider, UIN 512B227V01. LIC classifies it as an Individual, Non-Linked Health Rider. It can be attached at inception to an eligible non-linked life insurance policy and cannot be purchased as an independent health insurance policy. The latest brochure, policy wording and Customer Information Sheet are available on the official LIC Critical Illness Health Rider page.

What Is the LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator?

The LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator is an online benefit-estimation and policy-rule screening tool. It helps estimate the amount that may become payable when the Life Assured is diagnosed with an illness or undergoes a surgery covered under the chosen rider option.

The main calculation uses four details:

  • Selected rider option
  • Covered illness or surgery
  • Critical Illness Sum Assured
  • Total rider premiums paid

The calculator also includes a Claim Eligibility section. This section checks the entry age, premium payment type, rider term, policy status, base-policy Sum Assured, waiting period, survival period, outstanding rider premium and accident-related waiting-period exception.

This is not an official claim approval tool. An illness appearing in the calculator does not automatically make a claim payable. The diagnosis must satisfy the complete medical definition, required severity, exclusions, waiting period, survival period and documentary requirements specified by LIC.

The calculator also does not provide an official LIC premium quotation. The actual rider premium may depend on age, gender, selected option, Critical Illness Sum Assured, rider term, Premium Paying Term, payment mode, medical underwriting, taxes and other applicable factors.

Coverage Available Under the Rider

Comparison of LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Option 1 covering 15 specified illnesses and Option 2 covering 40 specified illnesses with Assisted Living Benefit for eligible conditions.

LIC’s Critical Illness Health Rider provides two coverage options. The option must be selected when the rider begins.

Option 1: 15 Major Critical Illnesses

Option 1 covers 15 specified illnesses and surgical procedures:

  • Cancer of specified severity
  • Open chest CABG
  • First heart attack of specified severity
  • Kidney failure requiring regular dialysis
  • Major organ or bone marrow transplant
  • Stroke resulting in permanent symptoms
  • Major surgery of the aorta
  • Open-heart replacement or repair of heart valves
  • Permanent paralysis of limbs
  • Blindness
  • Third-degree burns
  • Multiple sclerosis with persisting symptoms
  • Benign brain tumour
  • Primary pulmonary hypertension
  • Alzheimer’s disease

When an admissible claim occurs, the Critical Illness Sum Assured is generally payable as a lump sum. The critical illness cover terminates after the claim is admitted and paid. Every condition is governed by its detailed medical definition and exclusions in the official rider document.

Option 2: 40 Illnesses with Assisted Living Benefit

Option 2 covers 40 specified critical illnesses and surgeries. It includes all 15 conditions covered under Option 1 and 25 additional conditions.

The additional conditions include coma of specified severity, motor neuron disease with permanent symptoms, deafness, end-stage lung failure, end-stage liver failure, loss of speech, loss of limbs, major head trauma, Parkinson’s disease, myasthenia gravis, aplastic anaemia, loss of independent existence, progressive scleroderma, severe rheumatoid arthritis, cardiomyopathy, brain surgery and other specified conditions.

Under Option 2, Assisted Living Benefit is available for the following seven conditions:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Loss of independent existence
  • Permanent paralysis of limbs
  • Loss of limbs
  • Coma of specified severity
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Blindness

For an admissible claim involving one of these conditions, the monthly Assisted Living Benefit is equal to 1% of the Critical Illness Sum Assured. It is payable for 36 policy months following payment of the main lump-sum benefit.

If the Life Assured dies while receiving Assisted Living Benefit, the remaining instalments are paid to the nominee or beneficiary as a lump sum. The payments can also continue beyond the original policy term, subject to the claim having been admitted. These provisions are confirmed in the official LIC rider policy document.

Highlights of the Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator

The calculator provides a detailed but easy-to-understand benefit illustration. Its main features include:

  • Supports both official rider options and updates the illness list accordingly
  • Calculates the Critical Illness Sum Assured benefit and the 105% minimum-benefit condition
  • Shows the applicable balance modal premium deduction
  • Estimates the immediate lump-sum amount
  • Identifies conditions eligible for Assisted Living Benefit
  • Calculates monthly ALB and the total scheduled amount for 36 months
  • Checks important entry-age, rider-term and cover-ceasing-age limits
  • Screens policy status, waiting period, survival period and the accident exception

Why Use LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator?

The benefit calculation may involve more than simply reading the Critical Illness Sum Assured from the rider schedule. The minimum-benefit rule, outstanding modal premium deduction and Assisted Living Benefit can affect the displayed illustration.

The minimum Critical Illness Benefit cannot be less than 105% of the total rider premiums paid up to the date of diagnosis. Total rider premiums paid exclude explicitly collected taxes and extra premiums.

The calculator compares the Critical Illness Sum Assured with 105% of eligible rider premiums paid. It then shows the higher applicable amount before any balance rider premium entered for deduction.

It also separates the immediate lump sum from the monthly Assisted Living Benefit. This distinction is important because the combined scheduled benefit is not necessarily paid as one immediate amount.

The tool can also help compare the two options. Option 1 covers 15 specified conditions. Option 2 covers 40 conditions and provides an additional 36-month benefit for seven conditions that may substantially affect independent living.

The eligibility section explains why an estimated claim may not be payable. If a covered critical illness, or related signs or symptoms, occurs during the 90-day waiting period, the claim is normally not admissible and the rider terminates. However, the waiting period does not apply when the covered condition arises directly from an accident. The applicable survival period and all other claim conditions must also be satisfied.

How to Use the Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator

Begin by selecting Option 1 or Option 2. The illness dropdown will display the conditions covered under the selected option.

Choose the relevant critical illness or surgery. The name of the condition alone is not sufficient for a claim; the diagnosis must meet LIC’s complete medical definition.

Enter the Critical Illness Sum Assured mentioned in the rider schedule. The minimum is ₹1,00,000, and the amount must be selected in multiples of ₹5,000. The maximum is subject to the Sum Assured under the base plan, the limit specified by that plan, LIC’s underwriting rules and an overall limit of ₹1 crore.

Next, enter the total rider premiums already paid. Do not include taxes or explicitly charged underwriting extra premiums in this amount.

Open the Claim Eligibility section and enter the age at commencement. The minimum entry age is 18 completed years, while the maximum is 65 years on an age-nearer-birthday basis.

Select regular or limited premium payment and enter the rider term. The minimum rider term is five years for a regular-premium policy and ten years for a limited-premium policy. The maximum rider term is 25 years, subject to the term of the base policy and the maximum cover-ceasing age of 75 years.

Select the present policy status and enter the base-policy Sum Assured. Full rider cover generally requires the base policy and rider to be in force on the date of diagnosis.

Enter the number of days between the commencement or latest revival of risk and the diagnosis. A waiting period of 90 days normally applies. However, the waiting period does not apply to a covered condition arising directly from an accident.

Enter the number of days survived after diagnosis. The general survival period is 30 days, although a particular illness definition may require a different period or additional evidence of permanence.

Finally, enter any balance rider premium falling due before the next policy anniversary and select Calculate Benefits. This deduction applies only when the premium payment mode is other than yearly, all premiums due up to the diagnosis date have been paid, and further modal premiums fall due before the next policy anniversary. No balance-premium deduction applies under yearly mode.

Real Calculation Example

Consider the following illustrative example:

Illustrative LIC Critical Illness Rider Option 2 calculation showing a ₹10 lakh lump-sum benefit and ₹10,000 monthly Assisted Living Benefit for 36 months for Parkinson’s disease
  • Rider option: Option 2
  • Covered illness: Parkinson’s disease
  • Critical Illness Sum Assured: ₹10,00,000
  • Total rider premiums paid: ₹30,000
  • Policy status: In force for full cover
  • Waiting period: Completed
  • Survival period: Completed
  • Balance premium deduction: Nil

First, calculate 105% of the total rider premiums paid:

₹30,000 × 105% = ₹31,500

The applicable gross lump-sum illustration is the higher of the Critical Illness Sum Assured and 105% of total rider premiums paid:

Higher of ₹10,00,000 and ₹31,500 = ₹10,00,000

Parkinson’s disease is one of the seven conditions eligible for Assisted Living Benefit under Option 2.

Monthly Assisted Living Benefit:

₹10,00,000 × 1% = ₹10,000

Total Assisted Living Benefit:

₹10,000 × 36 months = ₹3,60,000

The calculator therefore shows:

  • Immediate critical illness lump sum: ₹10,00,000
  • Monthly Assisted Living Benefit: ₹10,000
  • Assisted Living Benefit period: 36 months
  • Total Assisted Living Benefit: ₹3,60,000
  • Total scheduled rider benefit: ₹13,60,000

The total of ₹13,60,000 should not be understood as one immediate payment. The ₹10,00,000 critical illness benefit is the estimated lump sum, while ₹3,60,000 represents 36 scheduled monthly payments of ₹10,000 each.

Important Eligibility Conditions

The following conditions can materially affect a claim:

Basic critical illness claim eligibility screening flow covering policy status, 90-day waiting period, medical definition, survival period and LIC assessment.
  • The base policy and rider must generally be in force for full cover on the diagnosis date.
  • The illness must be diagnosed during the rider term.
  • The diagnosis must meet the complete definition in the policy document.
  • The 90-day waiting period must be completed unless the accident exception applies.
  • The applicable survival period must be completed.
  • Medical evidence and supporting documents must satisfy LIC.
  • The claimed condition must not fall under a specific or general exclusion.
  • Critical illness benefit is payable only once during the rider term.

The rider ceases to provide critical illness cover after an admitted claim. However, scheduled ALB payments under an eligible Option 2 claim continue according to the applicable conditions.

Does the Rider Provide Maturity, Death or Loan Benefits?

There is no maturity benefit and no separate rider death benefit under LIC’s Critical Illness Health Rider. No loan is available under the rider.

The rider does not acquire a paid-up value. Its benefit ceases if the base policy becomes lapsed or paid-up. LIC also states that no surrender value is available under the rider. However, a limited-premium policy may qualify for a refund of unexpired risk premium in specified circumstances when the in-force base policy is surrendered. This is not the same as a regular surrender value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the calculator an official LIC calculator?

No. It is an independent illustration tool based on publicly available product rules. It cannot issue a premium quotation, approve a proposal or decide a claim.

Does the rider reimburse hospital bills?

No. It is a fixed-benefit rider. An admissible benefit is based on the Critical Illness Sum Assured and applicable policy rules, not on the actual hospital bill.

Is Assisted Living Benefit available under Option 1?

No. ALB is available only under Option 2 and only for seven specified conditions.

Can the rider be purchased separately?

No. It must be attached at inception to an eligible non-linked LIC life insurance policy.

Is every type of cancer or heart attack covered?

No. The diagnosis must satisfy the exact medical definition and severity stated in the rider document. Merely having a broadly similar medical condition does not guarantee eligibility.

Can more than one critical illness claim be made?

The critical illness benefit is payable only once. The rider’s critical illness cover terminates after an admitted claim.

Conclusion

The LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator provides a clear illustration of the lump-sum critical illness benefit, the 105% minimum-benefit condition and the Assisted Living Benefit available under Option 2. It also helps explain important eligibility rules such as the waiting period, survival period and policy status.

The calculator can be useful for understanding how the two rider options work, but its results remain indicative. The rider schedule, complete medical definitions, policy conditions and LIC’s final claim assessment determine the actual benefit payable.

Important Disclaimer

The LIC Critical Illness Health Rider Calculator provides an indicative benefit illustration and basic rule-based screening only. It does not approve or reject a claim.

LIC must confirm that the diagnosis satisfies the complete medical definition, required evidence, exclusions, waiting period, survival period and all other policy conditions. Some illness definitions may require a longer period or proof of permanent symptoms.

Final premiums, eligibility and benefits remain subject to the rider schedule, base-policy terms, medical underwriting, LIC’s claim assessment and the official policy documents. The LIC sales brochure and policy document should be checked before making any purchase, financial or claim-related decision.
